Celebrating the Birthday of Canada’s Toonie in Campbellford

campbellford toonie

Did you know that Canada’s famous $2 coin, the Toonie, has a special connection to Campbellford?
The Toonie officially entered circulation on February 19, 1996, replacing Canada’s $2 paper bill. Designed as a bi-metallic coin with a nickel ring and bronze centre, it quickly became a recognizable part of everyday Canadian currency.
But what many people don’t realize is that Churchill the polar bear featured on the Toonie was designed by Campbellford wildlife artist Brent Townsend.

The Campbellford Toonie Connection

Because of Brent Townsend’s contribution, Campbellford proudly celebrates this piece of Canadian history with its own Giant Toonie monument. Much like Sudbury’s Big Nickel, the monument has become a fun photo stop for visitors exploring Downtown Campbellford and the surrounding Trent Hills region.
